DAY 19: WRA...WE RISE AGAIN
Day 19 of running across America, 70 miles per day. By now you've probably seen the video of our quite significant revelation.
When you start to look at the impact of four or five days of lost time on the wrong trail, two days through the ER, multiple days of being sick, it adds up and you realize, right, we weren't going to able to hit that target. And when we were in the ER, I'm a little embarrassed to say, I think I put a little telescope, some blinders on, and told myself that I'd be happy if we just made it to Baltimore. Because at the time, it was just a couple of days and being sick: "okay, we'll push through, things will get better. We'll hang in there, we'll be close."
But then we hit the trails. And now we've learned that those trails were not a part of the route, that indeed the current record holder ran on roads, and we've looked at all those details. It's as if that telescope or blinders that I gave myself have just been blown off to say, "what if you weren't sick? What if you didn't have to go to the ER? What if you weren't climbing mountains and bushwhacking trails unnecessarily and that you just stayed on the road and let your legs and body do what they do?"
So for the last many hours, crew and I have been talking about a lot of different options and what we should do. I'll be honest, I feel like I owe it to the crew because they have so much invested in this. It's not just me
The last couple weeks have done nothing but prove to all of us that it's more than possible more than possible if we're not acutely sick and particularly on the right route and so after talking with crew quite a bit the last 12 hours we've decided to pause because we want to do this right. I've realized the target is not only just Baltimore. The target is the world record. And we are going to go after that one more time.
