DAY 12: ELY, NEVADA
It is the end of day 12. We closed out a couple of hours ago at over 52 and a half miles, which compared to my goal is maybe not where I'd like it to be. But considering we're still heavy into bronchitis mode, I guess I'll take it.
We had more climb than we thought we would have, and a lot of headwinds today. We've made it to Ely, Nevada which is great that gets us close to the east border to get into Utah so making it even into a third state is kind of unbelievable honestly, even though I set out on this endeavor.
I've actually been extremely fascinated with how much the body physically recovers overnight. Every day I get to a point of barely walking, to the point it makes it difficult to even take the steps into the RV, and yet, by the next morning, you turn around and you can do it again.
I thought I'd share at least what I believe are some of the key things that are making that possible. One of them is particularly some massage. My sister's been very helpful. It's a trained area for her, but even just moving the blood flow from the feet, from the calves, from the shin, the quads, the hamstrings, all the way back toward the heart, I do think has been a tremendous recovery technique and critical because every day feels so much better, even where I've had some minor injuries.
The second one, if you know me well, I've tended to be someone that eats a lot of vegetables and fruits. But for something like this (and again, my sister has been an advocate of this), is to eat heavy on the proteins. I mentioned yesterday when discussing nutrition topic, but one of the things that I'm eating far more of than I ever have in my life is all kinds of meat of all kinds—mostly fish, chicken, eggs. I can't tell how many calories of each I'm eating, but it's a lot. And I think some of my stomach is learning how to handle that.
I do think heavy on the protein is absolutely helping those muscles recover really fast to be able to turn around and do a replicate of 50 miles, 60 miles. And hopefully we're going to start cresting this on a regular basis. I hope you guys are enjoying the little clips. Send us questions as I'm happy to answer any and we'll continue on into tomorrow.
